This February 10, the Wine Pairing Weekend crew as we showcase some of our sweethearts are writing about women who own wineries or make wine — and food that pairs well with these wines.

This is my first wine pairing weekend experience and thus far it’s been a lot of fun. It was so cold the other day, not to mention the Super Bowl, that chili was on my mind. I wanted to try the Turkey Chili however. So I dove in. The Chili was delicious and I always love to talk about my friend Susanna Crociani and her wonderful wines.

I paired her Rosso di Montepulciano with the Chili and it worked well. Sangiovese is the most food friendly grape with great acidity and cherry, earthy notes. It was also savory enough to stand up to the incredible amount of spices in the dish.

This was a 2010 but it stood up beautifully. Generally I wouldn’t hold a Rosso for 8 years but I’m glad I did. It’s made with indigenous varieties Prugnolo gentile (Sangiovese) 60%, Canaiolo nero 15%, Mammolo 15%, Colorino 5%, Pulcinculo 5%.

Susannah’s winery is on the more traditional side of the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano wineries. I am going to see her today I believe and am very excited. In addition to having lovely wines, she is a dear friend and an incredibly creative fun person.

When I think of Mammolo, one of the grapes in the blend, I think of Susanna. She always reminds people that Mammolo is also the name of one of the Seven Dwarfs, Bashful. Mammolo is a hardy and somewhat rustic grape that is usually found in blends rather than as a mono-varietal wine.

I’ve written about Susanna often in the past. I like to write about women in the industry and especially Italian women who own wineries. This is the perfect #winewp for me to join the group.

“This is a very simple and hearty chili with plenty of flavor. It’s even better the second day! I serve this with lowfat Cheddar cheese and lowfat sour cream. It’s also delicious with crackers.”

1 1/2 teaspoons olive oil
1 pound ground turkey
1 onion, chopped
2 cups water
1 (28 ounce) can canned crushed tomatoes
1 (16 ounce) can canned kidney beans – drained, rinsed, and mashed
1 tablespoon garlic, minced
2 tablespoons chili powder
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

1. Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat. Place turkey in the pot, and cook until evenly brown. Stir in onion, and cook until tender.
2. Pour water into the pot. Mix in tomatoes, kidney beans, and garlic. Season chili powder, paprika, oregano, cayenne pepper, cumin, salt, and pepper.
3.Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer 30 minutes.

  2. Glad to have you join us for #winePW! This sounds like a great, traditional Italian red. I just sampled some great reds last night also made in very tradition way from Montenedoli, your description of the wine you had reminds me of that one. I will have to try this or similar Italian wine next time I make chili!
