Frappato is a red grape variety that hails from Sicily. You may have come across it in your tasting or wine travels when tasting Cerasuolo di Vittoria, a denominazione d’origine controllata e garantita (D.O.C.G.) wine from Sicily. The grape produces wines that are light in color with good body and cherry fruit aromas and flavors. It is sometimes made into a pure varietal wine but is also often blended with other red grapes from Sicily such as Nero d’Avola and Nerello Mascalese as well as indigenous white grapes such as Catarratto and Inzolia. It would be hard to write about Vittoria without mentioning the famed COS winery that is ever present in the U.S.
Vittoria is significant as well to me personally because I have a dear friend, Maria Giovanna, who hails from that city and because it is right near Ragusa where the man responsible for my family’s initial winemaking forays came from – Carmelo. Carmelo and my Dad made wine in our basement when I was growing up. As far as I’m concerned, it was nothing to write home about but until I tried my hand at home wine making some years ago, I had no idea just how difficult the process can be. This year is a special year and I am going to see if I can make a better wine this fall.
