Monday Musings: Personal Recommendations Make All The Difference

Radler

I wrote about my displeasure at finding only wines by the can at the Bronx Botanical Gardens on Earth day a few weeks ago. I was convinced that all my serious wine friends probably felt the same way. I apparently was wrong.

This past weekend, I went to a friend’s home for a welcoming party and what was he drinking, the above pictured can of Riesling. I was shocked and frankly laughed to myself thinking how people surprise you. He is one of the most well-versed people I know in the industry, has a terrific palate and has tried many more First Growths and prestigious wines that I have by a long shot. Yet here he was, in his new huge pad, drinking wine from a can.

When I looked at him strangely, he said, many wines that come in cans are pretty good. Try it sometime. I wanted to try it then and there but he didn’t have anymore. Instead, I happily drank rose from a carton of sorts.

It may not have been this exact wine but it was from Wineberry in this type of box. Again, I thought about how everything depends on context and personal recommendations at the end of the day.
