Sometimes there is a winery that just keeps popping up in your life in different locations and for me Masottina is one of those wineries. I first heard of the winery probably about ten years ago when I was at an amazing event called VinoVip in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.

A place I had never visited, the events were held in rifuigi at 1700 meters and higher as well as in a hotel called the “Miramonti.”
The hotel had spectacular views and a grand ballroom where seminars were held. They also had a charming bar with unbelievable views of the mountains. While sitting at the bar, I had a glass of wine and then another.
After a while I discovered that all of the wines, practically all still and sparkling were from a producer called Masottina. I liked their Prosecco from Conegliano Valdobbiadene. It was a pretty nice place to have all the slots on the wine list. Good gig if you can get it. I then was re-introduced to Masottina last year during the Milano Wine Week festivities in New York. A masterclass was held on a series of Masottina wines. We were tasting them blind which was a little odd on zoom but the quality of the wines was truly impressive across the board from their brut to their rive and everything in-between. Fast forward one year and this week I was looking for a bottle of Prosecco for a weekend barbecue. I picked up a Cava and a prosecco from Masottina, called the 96 collection. It is a brut version despite its 9g/l of residual sugar and was quite celebratory. I like to try all kinds of new producers but sometimes, it’s good to go with what you can be sure of. Masottina has proven itself to be that type of producer. They have quite a large estate with 280 hectares of vineyards and 75 years of history in the trade. On their website you can see how they use gravity to assist in all aspects of their wine-making, designing the winery in a way so as to facilitate this process. They are very attentive to sustainability not only in the vineyard, protecting biodiversity but also in terms of their packaging, weight of their glass bottles, and their photovoltaic system which provides energy and helps to reduce their carbon footprint. Masottina also pays attention to the social responsibility piece of the sustainability puzzle, paying attention to not only their ethics but also those of their supply chain as well. Furthermore their wines are also vegan as well. Many reasons to like this winery but the most important of all is that the wines are elegant and very well-made.

Now I want to travel again, with a glass of Prosecco in my hand!
