Montefalco Rosso – New Favorite Tuesday Wine

Today I remembered that my diner companions and I had another interesting Montefalco Rosso at that dinner I wrote about yesterday. This one was completely different from the first both in style and grape composition. I want to mention it to illustrate how much variety you can find in this denomination from Consorzio Tutela Vini Montefalco but also to show how within their diversity, they are all a very high level of quality thanks to all the work being done in the vineyards and in the cellars.

The sommelier at our table at the Locanda del Teatro brought out a wine that he thought as wine people we should taste. He brought out a Montefalco Rosso DOC that had Sangiovese, Sagrantino, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. The grapes are all vinified together. Some years, a portion spends time in oak before aging in the bottle. Other years it does not, depending on the year. This wine from Giorgio Iannoni Sebastiani.

The wine was beautifully crafted, quite different from the one we had earlier in the meal also a beautiful red. This one was bolder with more black fruit aromas coming from the international grape varieties. It also had more herbaceous notes than the prior wine as well as violet and other floral notes coming through. The tannins were well integrated and hints of tertiary aromas such as dried fruit, vanilla, and umami came through. I also got some balsamic notes. It had a long and persistent finish.

I am loving the idea of Montefalco Rosso on Tuesday nights. Its the perfect mid-weight wine that pairs well with a host of different dishes and introduces people to Umbria’s signature red – Sagrantino without overwhelming the,.

Some of the other amazing dishes we had are shown in the above photos. The food, the service, and the wines were terrific. A definite location to visit on your next trip to Montefalco.
