Italian Indigenous Grapes: Pascale Nero

This week’s Italian indigenous variety is Pascale Nero which hails from Sardinia where it is most widely grown. The grape is used generally in blends rather than in varietal wines . Typically the blend will also have Cannonau or Cagnulari in Sardegna. The grape can also be used as a table grape. The first producer to make the wine into a varietal was Tenuta Dettori, a biodynamic producer that does natural fermentation. The winery uses the Romangia IGT denomination for this wine.

Romangia is an area that has a long history with Vermentino, Cannonau, and Moscato di Sorso-Sennori. The Dettori vines are located at 250-300 meters above sea level. These bush trained vines are protected by 20 hectares Mediterranean scrub. The sea breeze help the grapes stay cool.
