This month the #winophiles traveled to Bordeaux. Join us on Saturday, October 21st at 11:00am EST for a chat on X formerly known as Twitter. You can find us using the hashtag, #WinophilesThe theme is Cru Bourgeois and other Bordeaux Beauties. Here is my intro post on the Cru Bourgeois appellation. I opened a special bottle of Cru Bourgeois to celebrate the month from Chateau Tour de Pez, a 2018. Château Tour de Pez is located in Pez in the Saint Estèphe appellation. The Tour de Pez was built in the 13th century while the the Chateau has over 200 years of history. As as appellation, Saint Estèphe, is one where the plots of very fragmented. So much so that different owners can have vines in the same vineyard, even if they own only a few rows.

In 1838, Chateau Tour de Pax was named as a Cru under the name “A Lhereteyre” and subsequently “Lhereteyre” or “Cru Lhereteyre” and classified as a Cru Bourgeois, and has remained so ever since. The winery has changed hands over the course of the past year.

Tasting Note:

Deep ruby in color, with notes of black fruit on the nose. On the palate. , med+ acid, high alcohol, little fruit. teritiary aromas and flavors of oak, leather, cedar, and smoke with hints of garrigue and forest floor. It also had a long and complex finish.

At Chateau Tour de Pez, attention to the environment is paramound and they have adopted sustainable cultivation methods. They have 19 hectares made up of 39 parcels and the soils are sandy-clay or loam-clay. I thought the wine would have been perfect with a steak. I also thought it was perfect on its own, particularly for a rainy Friday.

Enjoy the wines and join us on Saturday, October 21st at 11:00am EST for a chat on X formerly known as Twitter. You can find us using the hashtag, #Winophiles. Check out my fellow bloggers post.

  1. Thanks so much for hosting this month Susannah. I wasn’t familiar with Cru Bourgeois designation prior to this event.
