Today’s Monday Musings is about a topic very close to my heart, sustainability in wine. Last week, together with my co-chairs in Les Dames d’Escoffier NY Chapter, an organization of women in the food, beverage, and hospitality industry, we organized a panel on this exact topic. The event was called The Next Big Sip. The audience was very interested in our discussions but we were a self selected group.
That was last Tuesday, June 6th. June 7th looked like the Apocalypse with an orange sky, chewy air, and fear for the future of our planet. At least that’s how I felt. Not everyone seems to have reacted the same way on the Eastern seaboard and on the West coast, people are more used to it, sadly.
I wondered how people are going to translate their fear into action. Will wine buyers be willing to pay more and go the extra mile for wines that are made in a sustainable way. Sustainability is not just about the work in the vineyard but it is also about the cellar, the employees, the health and longevity of the business, and the impact on the community around the vineyards Two years ago I did a podcast series on this exact topic with a colleague and friend. I think it’s time to revive it.
