Conte Guicciardini: Belvedere Campóli

Yesterday I had the good fortune to see Conte Ferdinando Guicciardini, who I have known for many years now. I consider Ferdinando and his adoptive son – Bernardo – friends and was very happy to taste the new vintages of their wines from Belvedere Campóli, the estate that they purchased in 2015 in the Chianti Classico designation.

The winery is at over 400 meters above sea level in the San Casciano area. I tasted their beautiful 2021 Vintage, their Riserva 2019, and the Gran Selezione 2017. All three were elegant and complex wines with a majority of Sangiovese. Their oenologist often adds a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to the wines.

I have had the good fortune to visit the family at their estate Castello di Poppiano. An amazing place as you can see from the photos and the Vinsantaia is truly exceptional. I have yet to see their library which hosts volumes of incredible history and value. Perhaps one day, that will be in the cards as well.

Vin Santaia

I am a big fan of Vin Santo, climbing up to the Vinsantaia in Castello di Poppiano was a real highlight for me. Here’s a great picture of their carratelli, filled with that wonderful elixir known as Vin Santo.

This historic family is part of the fabric of Florence since 1199. Their ancestors have been involved in politics and the economic life of the city for generations.

I have asked the Count to adopt me numerous times but he has always politely declined. I tried again yesterday but I imagine the answer will be the same. Luckily I can try again on February 18th when I am sure he will be at the tasting of Morellino and Chianti DOCG during the other days of the Anteprime Toscane 2024.
